Homework and Agenda August 16-20, 2010

IT IS ABOUT TIME!
In 7th grade ELA, we will be beginning our Fiction Unit this week. You will be working in teams to research and develop examples of literary elements and author devices which readers can find in all works of literature. On Tuesday, your teacher will divide the class into groups for this assignment which will culminate into a class presentation on Thursday.

This week, we will be finishing the Edusoft pre-assessment, beginning your Everyday Edits, and receiving your book logs and your ZPD range.

Don't forget to bring those forms that you might have forgotten last week.
And, as always, bring an AR book with you to class everyday.

HOMEWORK - Due Friday, August 20th:
1. Finish your Summer Reading. Tests will be available beginning Monday. You have until August 27th to complete the two required books, take the 2 tests, and submit the 2 reading logs.
2. Go online and take the Learning Styles Inventory.
3. Complete the Coat of Arms. Make sure your submission is colored and your top three learning styles are artistically represented.

Jeans for Teens???

If you remember, last year we did Jeans for Teens. This was a service project that Mr. Michael G. informed us about. We were planning on doing this project again but we found out that their deadline is the 14th of February. So, we have decided to do our own. We will accept all gently used jeans that maybe don't fit you or never worn before. Do NOT just give us the jeans that you do not with. Also, do NOT just give us the jeans without your parents permission. The due date for this is the 26th of February. The jeans that we have collected will be donated to a nearby homeless shelter or donation center. More information will be given out at a later date.

Induction Ceremony

Coming up on the 14th of March, is our Induction Ceremony. All members may attend but only the new members are required to. New members are the people that were NOT in BETA last year but are in this year. Along with the new members, BETA Officers are required to come. Also, the parents of the new members are welcome to come. This ceremony will start at 3:15 on the dot. Be there or be square.

Go Falcons!!!

Attention all 7th Grade BETA Members!!! We know that you have heard of the wonderful school by the name of Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School and the falcons that go there. The school is a blue ribbon school and is great with academics. The falcons play volleyball, soccer, basketball, track, feild, & swim. They also have lots of clubs; BETA, Student Council, LEGOs, Video Games, and many more. Those falcons are so talented! We are asking every 7th Grader in BETA to sell at least ONE of the car flags to advertise the wonderful falcons. The flags are only $15. When you sell one, bring the money to either Ms. Kimbrough or Mrs. Segura, both on Hall A, and they will give you the flag to give to the person who paid for it. Remember that you can always sell more than one, and the person who sells the most gets something special.

GO FALCONS!!!

Help for Haiti!

We've learned from past experience that Betas are very quick to spring into action during times of national/international devastation. The situation with the earthquake in Haiti will be no exception.

We suggest logging on to the following websites for information on how your club and school can help the victims of the earthquake destruction in Haiti. (These are just a few suggestions of reputable relief organizations -- we realize there may be others you choose to utilize.)

http://www.redcross.org/
http://www.unicef.org/
http://mail.betaclub.org/lists/lt.php?id=KkgLB1AHVFFSTAZVCkUAAQMPUwY%3D
http://www.samaritanspurse.org/

If you have any suggestions of how we can help Haiti as a group, please submit your suggestion.

Let us lead by serving others.

New Members!

The BETA Club is looking to expand. We are looking for 6th Graders who have a 4.0 GPA and interested in joining. We are also looking for 7th & 8th Graders with a 3.0 GPA and can complete the 10 service hours by April 15th. If you want to join, sign your name and grade on the sign-up list outside Ms. Kimbrough's Door on Hall A.

Regional Competition

This past weekend, some of the BETA Club Members went to St.Francisville to compete in competitions. Even though every one did not win, we all had fun. We also remembered that BETA is just one big "Circle of Winners". We do want to congratulate Henry H. for winning 2nd Place in the Math Competition and Byron B. for winning 3rd Place in the Poetry Competition. We are ready state, but in order to go make sure you have all 10 hours, the grades, and no behavior problems.

Words to Live By

If you are in group talent, you know how important this quote is but we need everyone to know the importance. These words might confuse you, but after a while you will get them and join the team to live by the quote. The quote is:

"Often, someone gains more than the person."

-Johnny Depp

An Important Reminder

One of the parts of being in BETA is service. Service is when you do something to help someone without profit. We ask that you do something that you are not already required to do. For example, if every Saturday you have to babysit your younger brother, this is a service that you would do even if you were not getting BETA Service hours. This year you must get 10 hours of service. To recieve credit for all of your hours, a signature and picture of the service is required. If you need help finding a service to do, please leave a comment asking if anyone knows a service project. If anyone knows a service project that is coming up, please leave a comment and we might post it on the blog.

Service Hours are due on April 15th, 2010.
